The One thing your Watercolour Painting Process Needs

If you are thinking about your watercolour painting goals and wondering what your strategy should be, I have a simple approach to share.

There’s one thing your watercolour painting process really needs. It also happens to be the simplest way to set your painting goals and measure your success.

I know what you’re thinking.

But no, let me assure you it is not….

… some fancy art course

… or the right art supplies

It is not putting in a gazillion hours of practice…

… or mastering brush control.

The one thing your painting needs is your enjoyment.

Sure, that list of things above would obviously make you a more accomplished, proficient painter. But none of it matters if you are not enjoying yourself!

Your joy has to be the best reason to do anything. The rest is white noise, a distraction.

At the time of writing this we are beginning the new year. That part of the calendar where everyone is telling you how to set goals and generally be ‘better’.

I say let’s make enjoyment the goal. And let’s measure our success by the degree of entertainment we get from painting.

It doesn't really matter how the painting turns out or whether it looks like the photograph you used as a reference or whether you have perfect technique or excellent use of colour theory.

The funny thing is, those things will come either way once you engage with the process. Of course, you can actively pursue them if that feels like fun to you.

But what's the point unless you let yourself enjoy the simple act of painting?

By the way, if you are new to watercolour (or have previously been frustrated by it) you might want to try this approach. 👇👇

The more you paint the better you get at it.

Don’t forget, good art is highly subjective. 10 different critics will give 10 different opinions.

And let's be honest. You and I don't paint for critics!

💃 We paint to play - because grown ups need to do that too - even scientists say so… honest!

🧘‍♀️ We paint because creative expression is good for the soul.

🌈 We paint because colour is delightful.

🎓 We paint because learning new skills is actually quite fun (and you can do it any age!)

🤗 Most of all, we paint to please ourselves.

So make FUN your goal, enJOYment your marker of success and paint yourself a little happiness this year.
